Places to Visit

DARTMOOR  A 20 minute drive from Brixham will take you to the edge of Dartmoor, where many lovely water-falls, beautiful scenery, and country walks can be enjoyed. Explore this wild and beautiful Moorland, where the famous Dartmoor Ponies roam at liberty amongst the rocky crags, yellow gorse and heather.  Becky Falls (see photos below lef), Widecombe In The Moor, Haytor, and HoundsTor are just a few of the lovely places to visit.  For more information, see the DNP website.

DARTMOUTH is also within a couple of miles drive, being the location of the famous Britannia Royal Naval College, which has trained some members of our Royal Family.   Drive to Kingswear, then cross the ferry either by car or passenger ferry to Dartmouth at the other side of the river.     Breathtakingly beautiful, with its two fairy-tale castles - one on either side of the mouth of the river - quaint shops, cobbled streets, and river steamers.

Alternatively, drive (or take the bus) to Paignton, then catch the STEAM TRAIN which will take you to Kingswear Station; then you can cross by passenger ferry to Dartmouth.

A lovely excursion, is to take the steam train as above, but get a round-trip ticket which will take you to Kingswear by steam train, then a trip up the river Dart to Totnes.  TOTNES is a charming olde town, well worth a visit.

There are two car ferry routes between Kingswear and Dartmouth - the higher ferry and the lower ferry.  The higher ferry has a larger capacity, but the lower ferry operates with two boats at peak season.

PAIGNTON is a popular family beach resort, about 5 miles from Brixham, larger than Brixham, with a pier and all the entertainment one expects of a family resort.  It has a "green" which stretches along its esplanade, ideal for sand-free picnics!  Paignton has a harbour, and cliff walks (illuminated at night) around to Goodrington, another popular family beach resort, which boasts a waterpark - Quay West - a boating lake and other family attractions.

TORQUAY, a few miles further on, makes up the final third of the TORBAY triangle, Torquay, Paignton, Brixham.  Again, a popular family resort, with an impressive Marina, Theatre, Green, Fountains, and a nice shopping centre.   At the far end of the resort, you will find LIVING COASTS - a very nicely and sympathetically designed protected park for all kinds of water creatures and sea birds, which you can see and learn about in a natural habitat.

EXETER and PLYMOUTH are the two major cities for South Devon - both about 30 miles from Brixham in opposite directions.  Both are well worth a visit and have many visitor attractions.  Plymouth is famous for its Hoe, the location where Sir Walter Raleigh played his infamous game of bowls before sallying out to meet the Spanish fleet who were attacking Plymouth.
